Alan Koslow Humanism in Science Fiction: Ethics Without Divine Authority Sat • 4:00 PM • Nebraska Humanism in Science Fiction examines the genre as a sustained moral inquiry into how humans think, choose, and behave when divine authority is absent or irrelevant. Tracing a historical arc from Renaissance humanism through early speculative works, the emergence of modern science fiction, the optimism and limits of the Golden Age, the inward turn of the New Wave, and contemporary concerns about scale and power, the lecture argues that science fiction consistently tests human values under radically new conditions. Rather than predicting the future or celebrating technology, science fiction repeatedly asks what responsibility, empathy, and ethical action look like when no higher moral order guarantees meaning or redemption. At its core, the genre explores what humans do—and who they become—when nothing higher is watching.

Alan Koslow Before Science Fiction Had a Name: From Greek Satirist to HG Wells Sat • 9:00 PM • Kansas Science fiction didn’t suddenly appear in the 19th century—it evolved over nearly two thousand years. This panel looks at the earliest deliberate speculative stories, beginning with ancient travel tales that openly invented impossible worlds, technologies, and societies, and moving forward through satire, early science, and social critique. These writers weren’t telling myths; they were consciously making things up to explore how the world works and how humans behave. The discussion traces how those ideas develop and sharpen over time, ending with H.G. Wells, where speculation, science, and modern storytelling finally lock together into what we now recognize as science fiction.
