Programming

DemiCon is an interactive adventure with all sorts of amazing ways to be involved. Check out some of the program areas we have available.

There are two versions of the programming grid. One shows all the programming by day and time. The other shows programming sorted by panelist, which is a great way to find all the panels your favorite guests will be participating in.

If you like what you see please remember that a con does not run itself. With your help we can make it the best weekend ever for sci-fi, fantasy, and gaming fans in Iowa. You can volunteer, run your own panel, and more!

The deadline to sign-up to run your own panel past, but we will accept submissions. We are just not able to guarantee fitting you on the schedule. If you have any questions you can reach programming at programming@demicon.org.

If you have any interest ins helping out in the gaming room or scheduling a gaming session please reach out to gaming@demicon.org.

DemiCon Channel

The Demicon Channel this is year is coming to you in two parts.

The first part is the traditional DemiCon channel which is shown on a hotel channel during the run of the DemiCon convention and presents live main stage Con events, past convention events including Trans-Iowa Canal Company Shows, Music Shows; and Original programming. All programming items are family-friendly but some late night programming items do move into the PG-13 area.

The second part of the DemiCon Channel is shown on DMSFFS YouTube channel and on Zoom during the run of the DemiCon convention and includes past programming events, inventive original comedy bits, the Secret Toastmaster contest, original shows, author readings and this year will add some live Zoom panel events directly from the convention.

Between live events on Zoom, Joe- the ChannelMaster will also be playing Acorn:  Attack of the Squirrels with people watching the channel using his Oculus VR setup.   Just download the free Acorn app on your phone if you would like to play as a squirrel stealing golden nuts from a tree protected by Joe in his Oculus VR helmet.   Up to six squirrels to team up between shows to win the game.

The ChannelMaster will also be showing some programming in a Big Screen room (Oculus/Meta app) so if you have an Oculus/Meta VR setup of your own check the DemiCon Discord for showing places/times and the Big Screen room number that you can jump into and join the fun.

Between channel items, the DemiCon Channel shows advertising mainly for vendors in the DC Dealer’s Room. Vendors can send the Channel Master (demiconchannel@demicon.org) up to two or three standard images or Powerpoint slides that can be used in advertising segments. Limited standard full video advertising spots are also available for a minimal fee- primarily intended for Con Vendors or DMSFFS-related businesses. Contact the Channel Master for additional advertising information.

The DemiCon Channel Guide will be posted at the convention with potential live events being marked and zoom links available on the DemiCon discord.  So even if you can’t attend DemiCon in person or prefer to stick more around your hotel room- the DemiCon Channel has something in store for you.

Filking

Got Filk? What is Filk?

Filk is usually associated with music parodies (á la Weird Al). Most of what we call “filk” consists of parodies, SCA songs, folk or Celtic songs, silly songs, or whatever songs people want to share. Really narrows it down, doesn’t it? We have plenty of filking at DemiCon, mostly run in a “Bardic circle” format. In this format, everyone gets a turn to choose singing a song yourself, picking a tune for the group to sing, or passing your turn. This way, everyone gets to participate! In addition, we’ll be having interactive fun and panels with filk! Come share your ideas, rhymes, and creative energies to help us write a song parody in about an hour.

Live Action Role Play (LARP)

LARP – The Big CoWS Buyout In Metro City

Rumors of the MegaSoft buyout of SnowStorm games is running wild at the “Big Event” Software show in Metro City.   Snowstorm’s RV game CoWS “Countries of War Struggle” is hot but is it too hot to handle as some business men will go to any lengths to be on the right side of a deal.

This is a Live-Action Role-play where you act as a character in the game and interact with other characters.    Player’s choose from corporates, hackers, coders, security/Ninja and Blanks and interact with other players along with NPC’s/AI to fulfill their goals.

Come on and join the fun and chaos of this cyberpunk themed LARP.   People who have never participated in a LARP before are always welcome and prizes/ribbons are awarded at the end of the game.

Self-run Programming

There are times when you want to do something at your own pace. This is the programming for you.

Stop in at the Hub to choose and check out an activity or go on the DMSFFS Discord to join in virtually. Come and join the fun!

Pet Parade

Sharing Pictures of Your Costumes

Location: Discord

DemiCon halls are always full of wonderful costumes. We invite you to share your costume on the #costuming channel on Discord. Remember to follow the photo policy and ask permission before taking another person’s picture and posting it anywhere.

Cardio Loop & Step-up Challenge

Location: In person and Discord

For a number of years one of our traditional self-programming options was the Cardio Loop, and it’s back. Follow the route designated by the cardio loop signs in the hotel. You can do as many loops as you want. Sign up in the the hub and track your progress. Participation prizes are awarded.

The inspiration for the Cardio Loop came from a blog by Michael Moore. He took a walk for a half hour one day as kind of a joke. When he blogged about how the brief walk made him feel better many people suggested doing it again the next day. So began a step by step journey. Check out his blog for more info: https://michaelmoore.com/walk-with-mike/.

For those at home who can’t join us (or in person attendees that wants to do two different challenges!) we invite you to do the Step-up Challenge.

Track your steps using your fitness tracker or a similar free app on your phone.

Research suggests that 1000 steps is roughly a half mile for most people. We are going to count every 1000 steps you take as equivalent to one Cardio Loop.

Share your step progress in the #step-up-challenge channel in Discord.

This is not a race. It is not a contest.

Every step counts. Every step is a victory. Every step should be celebrated!

So move it move it however works for you. Cardio Loop it and/or Step-up to the challenge!

The After Mystery Scavenger Hunt

Location: In person (with cyberspace elements)

The DemiCon Scavenger Hunt and Hide & Seek events have combined this year to take you on a one of a kind choose your own path cyber mystery adventure.

There are three mysteries you can choose from, though your virtual guide Bit suggests doing all of them.

You will need an entry point interface (aka a cell phone with a camera that can scan QR codes!) to participate.

Scanning entry points will take you into cyberspace where you will meet interesting characters and be presented with different stages. You can play by yourself or in a group.

At the end of each mystery there will be a final entry point that will take you to a question that you will need to answer. If you are playing with a group, each group member may submit their own answer because you might not all be in agreement! All right answers will be added to a drawing at closing ceremonies. If you complete all three mysteries, that’s three entries into the drawing.

All questions must be entered by noon on Sunday. Around 1 pm Sunday, a final entry point will be posted outside the Hub and on Discord. This entry point will give you the solutions to the mysteries.

Bit, your guide, will also be available virtually in #the-after-challenge channel on Discord if you have questions, but if you are asking for a hint Bit may talk back in riddles!
