Bill DavisSunday 11AM-12PMFountain Pens: Steampunk Tech in Modern LifeThis panel's first presentation at DemiCon 28 was packed, so we decided to do it again! Fountain pens were invented in the 1880's and are having a resurgence in popularity in the 21st Century. Guest of Honor Joe Haldeman uses a fountain pen to hand-write his books. So do several other SF/F authors I am aware of, or they are big fountain pen fans (Harlan Ellison, Neil Gaiman, Neil Stephenson. Kevin Hearne, Erin Morgenstern). Neil deGrasse Tyson is a big fan of them, as is Bill Nye The Science Guy (and head of the Planetary Society). I started and run a local pen club, IowaPen, here in Des Moines and we now have a Cedar Rapids chapter as well (hear that, ICON!) We also have a great pen store in town, in Valley Junction, called Quill & Nib.. I plan to discuss the history and future of fountain pens, the technology, their Iowa connections, their SF/F connections and more. I may also have pens available for audience members to try out and see what the big deal is.(Bill Davis, Joe Haldeman)Kansas - Lower Level

Saturday 1PM-2PMIf This, Then What? What if they’d killed Hitler in one of the assassination attempts? What if Hannibal and his elephants had frozen in the Alps, and never made it to Rome? What if the Catholics had never gained a hold on 11th-Century Spain? There are so many turning points available to the alternate historian! How can we extrapolate what would have changed, as a result of these or others—not just politically, but in terms of culture, commerce, and daily life? Where do you begin? How does one decide where to focus, when constructing an alternate history and what to set aside? What is the range of aspects must you consider? And what (if anything) would stay the same?(Jan Gephardt, Lucy Synk, Tyrell Gephardt)Kansas - Lower Level

Saturday 4PM-5PMFuture FaithsIs it possible that human beings riding in tiny, fragile little tin cans will face the vast reaches of space, with all its unpredictable dangers without taking the religions of the world with them? If there will be Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, and others out there on the Final Frontier, how will their faiths adapt? Can a person still be a faithful Wiccan if s/he lives on a non-terrestrial planet? In what direction should the faithful Muslim pray? Will Christians believe that Jesus also can save non-human sentient beings? Why do so many writers resort to made-up religions, rather than extrapolating the evolution of real ones? In the USA today, many of our debates are fueled by religious faith--as are bloody conflicts all over the globe, to this day. Yet many sf writers seem to assume that we'll all become rational atheists once we venture into space. Is that even remotely likely?(Jan Gephardt, Lucy Synk)Nebraska - Lower Level
Saturday 8PM-9PMDoctor, Where’s Your Tricorder? Some visions of medicine in the future are decried by those in the medical field are scoffed at as “wand-waving,” although other ideas seem more actually plausible. Back in 1949, Robert A. Heinlein infamously predicted that colds, flu, and cancer would have been eradicated by the year 2000. Why didn’t that happen?  Saturday 10PM-11PMInclusive and Not-so-Inclusive FuturesIn science fiction of the past, it often was assumed that the crews of exploratory space missions would be all-white and all-male (also, all straight). For many decades any author who tried to suggest otherwise had difficulty getting published, and no publisher’s marketing department wanted a person of color on the cover, fearful it would “depress sales.” While these attitudes now seem absurd, the term “whitewashing” remains current. (“Whitewashing” is a casting practice in the film industry of the United States in which white actors are cast in historically non-white character roles. The film industry has a history of frequently casting white actors for roles about non-white characters. By downplaying the roles that such figures have had in cultural events, the practice is seen as a form of censorship—Wikipedia). It’s still considered risky in some ways to portray certain minorities in positive ways (gender identity and non-hetero sexuality remain subject to more squeamishness—so much so that separate sub-genres, some might say “ghettos,” have sprung up to serve readers interested in stories about them). How has science fiction gotten more inclusive, and where does it still have a long way to go?(Jan Gephardt, Lettie Prell, Tyrell Gephardt)Illinois - Lower Level
Sunday 12PM-1PMWhat Are an Artist's Rights Online? When is it “stealing” and when is it “fair use”? Is the Creative Commons idea the future of digital art, or its nemesis? Sharing, Re-tweeting, and Pinning: what is the online etiquette? How are evolving? What kinds of images are "safe" to put online these days, and what aren't? Will a figure drawing get you blacklisted for porn?(Jan Gephardt, Keri Goble Billick, Tyrell Gephardt)Nebraska - Lower Level

Sunday 11AM-12PMFountain Pens: Steampunk Tech in Modern LifeThis panel's first presentation at DemiCon 28 was packed, so we decided to do it again!
