Iowa DOT is still in the process of reconstructing I-235.
Construction currently has severely limited the exits into and
out of the Downtown area. For those of you coming into town
either from I-235 eastbound or westbound (this would be anyone
approaching Des Moines on I-35 or I-80), we're recommending that
you take the Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway (MLK) exit (Exit #7A)
and travel South. Continue on MLK when it turns East (while Fleur
Drive continues South) and cross over the blue arch bridge.
Turn North (left) on 12/13th Street (2nd light).
Turn East (right) on Walnut,
then turn South (right) on 10th and there you are at the
front door of the Hotel Fort Des Moines.

For those of you coming from the airport, travel North on Fleur
Drive. Turn onto Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway (MLK) where it
turns East and cross over the blue arch bridge.
Turn North (left) on 12/13th Street (2nd light).
Turn East (right) on Walnut,
then turn South (right) on 10th and there you are at the
Hotel Fort Des Moines.

Just prior to the East turn onto
Walnut is the entrance into one of the parking ramps that we

To leave the hotel you need to get onto either Walnut or ??? heading
west and turn South (left) on 13th Street. 13th hangs left and Ts into
12th Street. Turn South (right) on 12th Street and take it to MLK. Cross
over the blue arch bridge and turn right or left at the next light. A right
turn will get you onto MLK heading north to I-235. A left turn will get
you onto Fleur Drive heading south toward the airport.
