Volunteers: How To Sign Up
DemiCon 18: May 18-20, 2007
As you sign up for volunteer slots, there are some things you should consider:
- What is your mobility level? Do you want to sit, walk around, be fairly active, or are you good for things such as heavy lifting? Do you have any physical restrictions?
- What is your sociability level? Do you want to interact with lots of people, as in the ConSuite or Registration, or do you prefer not being too chatty (as in data entry or ConSuite morning deep clean)?
- What are your scheduling restrictions? When you look at the volunteer grid to see what appeals to you, cross check it against the program grid so if you really want to attend TICC’s musical version of Faulkner’s “As I Lay Dying,” you don’t double book yourself.
- How many hours are you interested in working? Don't overdo it, especially if this is your first convention. Remember, you are here to have fun, and if by the end of Friday night you are too tired to remember what the difference between a fan and a pro is, you're overdoing it! Observe Passovoy's 5/2/1 Law of Conventions: Get at least 5 hours of sleep per night, eat at least 2 balanced meals per day, and take 1 shower per doay. Note: 1 shower may replace 1 hour of sleep, but 5 meals do not replace one hour of sleep, and NOTHING replaces a shower! Hey, stop snickering! Your Volunteer Department Head is a nurse, and if she has to scrape you up off the floor, she will be very unhappy! So, take care of yourself, and HAVE FUN!
