Filk

DemiCon 16: July 29-31, 2005

Since the first DemiCon there has been filking, sometimes in attendees' rooms, sometimes in the hallways and sometimes as regularly scheduled events. This year will be no exception. DemiCon attendees can enjoy scheduled and impromptu filking. This year we will again have filk panels followed by filking until either the sun comes up or we fall down. The room will also be available for filk jamming on Friday and Saturday night.

What is Filk music?

Filk is the music of science fiction, fantasy, horror and other genre's. Filk songs can be about any subject you could imagine. There are filk songs about NASA, computers, cats, and about fandom itself. They can tell a story or be funny, sad or completely non-sensical. The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) has many songs about history, real and imagined, as well as those about their own kingdoms and cultures. There are filk songs about filkers or other filk songs. There is even a filk song for the definition of Filk.

The music of filk can be parodies (new and usually humorous words that are sung to old tunes) but also filk can be original tunes as well as words. Traditional Irish or pub songs also pop up frequently at filk sings.

Filk is songs that science fiction fans and medievalists have written to share with each other.
